Scary Movie

The entire premise behind this film strikes me as being on rocky ground. It is a spoof of the teen horror films, like the Scream series and I Know What You did Last Summer. Such films are already acknowledged to have been written with the tongue placed firmly in the cheek. In short there is not much "urine left to extract".

What we are left with are second rate look a like teen actors replaying scenes from many of last years hit films, with very little added in the way of clever observations or irony. There is nothing subtle about the humour in this film. I think the target audience is probably the fifteen-year-old American male that found American pie so hilarious.

Where American Pie had a spark of originality, Scary Movie feels like an O’grade Media Studies school project, albeit from a school where a healthy effects budget can be used to mask the lack of creative juices.

And so it is with great intrepidation that I await the arrival of Road Trip, another teen gross out flick.

Martyn Campbell thinks Scary Movie is the "greatest film of all time". Let’s see if he can get his finger out and tell us why. It might make some interesting reading.
