FILM:          GONE IN 60 SECONDS

DIRECTOR / CAST:   DOMINIC SENA / NIC CAGE, GIOVANNI RIBBISI, ROBERT DUVALL, ANGELINA JOLIE

Ah, the Summer, isn’t it great – Sunshine, ice-cream and scantily clad women.

Hey! I can dream. But what you can be sure of is every Summer you’re guaranteed a high-octane thrill ride from super producer Jerry Bruckheimer. And this years certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Story

Kit Raines (Ribbisi) has agreed to steal 50 top end cars for the local Mr Big (Christopher Ecclestone) who goes by the name of the Carpenter.

However, following the theft of a Porsche, the police manage to follow Kit to the warehouse where he is storing his cars.

Kit and his gang manage to flee before being arrested. However, all their cars are impounded.

Because of his mistake Kit has four days to deliver the cars or he’ll be killed, cue Randall (Memphis) Raines (Cage) who was formerly the most wanted car thief in LA but who managed to get out before he was arrested.

Randall meets with the Mr Big believing at first that he is just settling a debt, however he is soon informed of the extent of his brothers problems. Randall, reluctantly agrees to take the job on in order to help his brother.

Following the taking of the job we’re then treated to what is almost a rehash of Armageddon’s gathering of the team before the car thefts begin.

Cast

Once again we have a Bruckheimer’ film which has a fantastic and varied cast.

Cage is fantastic as the ultimate car thief. Memphis never stole the cars just for money, for him it was the rush of driving these super machines.

Ribbisi is good as the younger brother who’s trying to follow in Memphis’s footsteps.

Duvall is Cage’s mentor who now restores classic cars. Jolie is the former love interest with a similar love for cars.

As well as Mr Big breathing down his neck Cage is being pursued constantly by the police led superbly by Delroy Lindo and a rival gang still pissed at Cage for depriving them of cash years ago when he was still in the car theft business.

There are so many characters whom you’ll recognise I could be here for ages.

Film

The film is great, if you like Jerry Bruckheimer films.

If you don’t like Jerry Bruckheimers’ previous movies then I think you would enjoy this even less. You have the usual mix of fast editing, little story and high action.

Sena’s direction is very slick, the action is fast and furious.

The soundtrack is a very poppy with the likes of Fatboy Slim and the Chemical Brothers.

This is a great veg and forget movie, It’s definitely no masterpiece, it is however great fun.

Gone in 60 Seconds is released on R1 DVD on 28/11/00
