Ever After: A Cinderella Story
A review by Louise Bruce
OK - you know the plot. Loving Dad remarries Evil Stepmother (With two Ugly
Daughters), Dad pops his clogs and poor wee daughter is left at mercy of Wicked
Stepmother.. Local Prince looking for a bride. Has a Grand Ball. all
eligible maidens invited. poor little Cinderella not allowed to go. that is
until Fairy
Godmother turns up... Leaves the Ball at stroke of midnight. Leaves behind her
glass slipper. price searches for her. find her. falls in love. and they live
happily ever after...
Well. Not Quite...
There are no pumpkins, magic wands or shy quiet Cinder girls in this story!
Danielle (Cinderella - Drew Barrymore) is a feisty tomboy with a passion for
reading, Prince Henry (Prince Charming - Dougray Scott) is a shallow young man
desperate to study rather than marry, Rodmilla (Evil stepmother - Anjelica
Huston) is delightfully nasty, her two "ugly" daughters Marguerite
& Jacqueline (Megan Dodds & Melanie Lynskey ) are not exactly ugly and
only one of them is spiteful,
Danielle has an ally in the other. Leonardo da Vincin (Fairy Godmother (!)
- Patrick Godfrey) is comical and sinister character exists in Pierre Le
Pieu (Richard O'Brien) who is intent on having Danielle (and her lands) for his
own.
The scenery alone makes this a worthwhile film to watch. The costumes are
superb and the acting strong.
This is a wonderful realistic twist on the old tale. Certainly one for all
romantics.
