Atlantis
The Lost Empire
A
Disney animated feature without songs? How
does that work? I'll answer that
later.
Atlantis
was slated by the critics and poorly received by the cinema going public.
What was the House of
Mouse's chief error concerning this feature.
They underestimated the power of a large green ogre with a bad Scottish
accent.
Going
up against Shrek for the coveted Summer audience, Atlantis never really stood a
chance.
Think
of an animated Raiders Of the Lost Ark peppered with elements of Star Wars and
Stargate and you'll have the measure of this film.
Not necessarily a bad thing, it just doesn't feel like a Disney film.
Having
said that, there's a nice plot twist and some excellent computer graphics,
blended nicely with the more traditional Disney 2D characters.
The
use of sound, including the orchestral score, adds an extra dimension to the
film. The sound of the submarine's
engine is particularly effective.
If
you can live with the characteristically over the top voice's then you could do
a lot worse than invest an hour and a half of your time in Atlantis, The Lost
Empire.
